🙂įor the record, since Edublogs is completely web-based, the blogging experience is pretty much the same. So I set out to get my own copy, and have written this entire blog post from the new operating system on an older laptop I had lying around. Plus, I wanted an excuse to give Chrome OS a spin.

Since we expect at least some of our users to begin using Chrome OS in the near future, I thought I should test it out. You can download the open-source version, called Chromium OS, for free and boot it up on your computer!

It really pushes the whole cloud computing concept to limits we haven’t before experienced.īut what if you want to try out the operating system before shelling out the $380+ for a new device or committing to the education subscription model of $20 per device per month?

These netbooks are the first devices marketed towards the average user, schools, and students that don’t run the more familiar Windows or Mac operating systems. If you choose to set up the device for your child, the installer will give you extra options for setting parental controls. As you may have heard, the brand new Chromebooks running Chrome OS are being rolled out by Google this week. All you need to do is follow the prompts and enter the account information for whichever option you choose. Next, it'll ask you if you'd like to set up your new (or is it old?) Chromebook for yourself or your child. You will still be able to install the system to your device's hard drive at any time.

Unlike most live USB systems, if you elect to try Chrome OS Flex without installing it to your computer's hard drive, it'll save the account you set up and the options that you choose on the USB and use it automatically the next time you boot from the same media. One of the most interesting things about the Chrome OS Flex USB installation media is that it uses persistent storage. The initial Chrome OS Flex installation screen should load up within a few moments and the installer will ask if you would like to install to the hard drive on your computer or try it from the USB media.
